Maternity checkup is very important for mothers and babies. Once you find you are pregnant, find your doctor as soon as possible and have a regular maternity checkup for safe delivery and healthy baby. You will receive weight check, blood pressure check, blood test, urine test, ultrasound test and so on. You will have maternity checkups more often as pregnancy progresses. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience swelling, weakness due to morning sickness, increased heart rate, abdominal pain, severe constipation, bleeding and so on.
Sapporo city offers subsidy for maternal checkups: 14 times for general checkups and 8 times for ultrasound tests. When you submit notice of pregnancy issued by your doctor, you will receive boshi-techo (maternal and child health handbook, Japanese version or bi-lingual version) and coupon ticket for subsidy.
Boshi-techo is available in Japanese and foreign languages. You can choose one of them. Foreign language boshi-techo is available in 8 languages: English, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Tagalog, Portuguese, Indonesian and Spanish.
Maternity check-up is not free of charge, but the items written in the coupon ticket are covered by Sapporo city. You pay the rest of the cost.
