Partially subsidized postpartum care is now offered at designated midwife clinics

The city of Sapporo now offers a partial subsidy to mothers with newborn babies who take advantage of the postpartum care service at a midwife clinic. A midwife will provide care to you and your baby according to yours and your baby’s condition and your concerns.

This service is available for overnight stays in the clinic as well as daytime visits.

The kinds of postpartum care provided:

  • Consultation: a midwife will consult with you and decide what is needed.
  • Relaxation: You can relax with your baby.
  • Breastfeeding advice: A midwife will advise you on the best timing for breastfeeding and breastfeeding techniques.

Who is eligible for this service?

This service is intended for mothers living in Sapporo with babies younger than 6 months old. Mothers who feel that they cannot get enough support with household chores or childcare from their families and are feeling rundown, tired, or anxious about raising children are welcome to use this service.

Please note that this service is not intended for those that require medical treatment.

Fees

¥4,000 for daytime and ¥10,000 for an overnight stay with 3 meals. If your household is exempt from paying city tax or if you are a welfare recipient, the prices are ¥2,000 and ¥5,000 respectively. Each family can use this service for up to 7 days.

How to apply

You must call to make an appointment and confirm the actual fee as some clinics carry additional charges. In addition, the fees differ for mothers that wish to bring multiple children and mothers of multiple births (twins, triplets, etc.)

Please note that any changes in your reservation later than noon of two business days prior to your consultation visit you will be charged the full fee for the original appointment.
